Linux is an operating system (OS), just like Windows. It allows you to use your computer. Linux is not an application that you can 'install in Windows'.
Buy and install another hard disk. Set the jumpers of the new disk to be the master and set the jumpers on your Windows disk to be the slave.
Put your Linux CD in the drive and reboot your PC. Install Linux on the blank hard drive. It will automatically detect your Windows disk and create a boot menu option for it.
The result will be a dual-boot PC - the safest way to start your foray into Linux.

if you want both windows & linux, you have to partition your hard drive, that means cutting it up and using part of it for 1 OS and the other part for another
if you want only linux, you simply format your hard drive and install linux like you would windows, which might be easier if you have an easy to use distribution like red hat or mandrake

a very smple option is to try out DyneBolic linux's live cd, its a multimedia OS with audio & video editing capabilities.
use the live cd, if u like it, copy it to another partition and boot from bootable cd
that way u boot in winxp normally and boot into linux with the live cd. the cd pops out after booting when u have docked it to ur pc (ie copied the folder onto HDD)
