the weird whirling sound it made is an internal failure of the starter called a starter drive. these tend to not fail completely at first and will get worse with time. your starter has now failed replace the starter and solenoid. these can be purchased either as a complete assembly or separately. it is best to replace both.

The solenoin on your starter is out. They are sold as one unit so it is best to just replace the starter. You starter is a big electric motor that give you gasoline engine its initial turn. Since it is only used once the solenoid pushes a gear on the starters motor out to engage your engines flywheel and turn you engine. With the solenoid not work you starter is turning and not engaging your flywheel. Most starter/solenoids do not just die but will not fuction intermittenly getting worse as time goes on and eventually just not work at all . I rather replace it while I can than when you really need to start your car. Hope this helps and God Bless. And Starters from AutoZone are usually less than 50 bucks for Chevys and are not to difficult to install.

yeah for sure the starter...if ya need to get it going and only for now just hit the starter repeatedly in the area of the solenoid with a hammer or something very hard and sturdy while someone else tries to turn the ignition over it works but only a few times before it completely goes...but yes its the starter...

Sounds like the starter solenoid sticking. Starter solenoids tend to build up a white-ish powder. As a temporary fix, bang around the starter with a wrench that usually loosens it...Then get your solenoid, or entire starter replaced.

You probley need a new starter, or just to get the one you have rebuilt (which I hear is cheaper according to my friend who just got his car worked on from a similar situation). I'd say your best bet is to get your car looked at by a pro.

since you say it clicks and the battery is new...my guess is the start driver isn't kicking out to engage the fly/flex plate....so i'd say yes...it's time for a new starter...usually cheaper then getting it rebuilt...
