All depends on what you need it for. Dell has a decent range of systems and the warranty is usually pretty solid
If you want to play newer games then you'll want a core 2 duo chip with a higher end graphics card and a solid 2 gigs of ram to get the best performance.
On the other hand, if you're just using the internet & email, office software....not too heavy on encoding or processor demanding applications then you can save yourself a lot of money by picking up a low-performance model. Maybe an older pentium-d processor and an onboard graphics chip. They offer the budget systems starting around $400 or so
You can pretty much run office software, burn cd's, listen to music, and browse the web just fine on an old school pentium3 system. However, the newer operating systems require a bit more to get running. Vista needs at least 512MB or ram but really, if you want all the aero bells & whistles you need a full 1GB as well as a mid-range graphics card.

At least 1024MB (1GB), but ideally 2GB of ram, especially if you intend to run Vista. If you can, get a dual core processor (Core 2 Duo or Athlon 64 X2. Stay away from Pentium D). Out of the budget processors, Sempron is currently better performing than Celeron.
I don't know much about computer brands, but people seem to think Dells suck for some reason. Whatever computer you get, you'll want one that has a PCI Express X16 slot so you can add a discrete graphics card if you want to some time in the future.
If you're going to get Vista, get Home Premium, not Home Basic. Home Basic lacks a lot of the things that make Vista worth having.

Not a good time to have to make this decision. Windows Vista just released and the market moving into 64 bit machines.
Machine speed and memory is most important.
Dell is well known and popular but not necessarily the best. But is a great choice for a general home pc. 80 gig hard drive or bigger,1 to 2 gig of (fast,or ddr2) ram. 800 fsb is faster than 533,
ask seller for specs.I built myself 1 this week, 64 bit 3.2gigabyte pentium 4 (using it now) in Australia and it cost me $500 for the complete box. Equal price in store $1200.

Vista. It needs windows vista preinstalled. 1 or more gigs of ram and dual core proccesor, good graphics card are needed. Vista has firewall and windows defendert search for viruses. You can schedule automatic backups and the system if anything goes wrong tries to fixit in the background before it alerts you. With ultimate version you can bitlock important data on your pc. If you really want to get use to microsofts new system get a book like "using microsoft windows vista" which will tell you how to do more security and show you features like microsoftsnew UI and Flip 3d and anything else you would want to know. http://windowsvista.com

Nancy, I have the Dell XPS400 with a total memory of 2.8 g. This is more memory than I need, I'd call it too much unless you use it for small business, then it would be at home. Hope it helps.

memory isn't as important as they make it sound.. vista will take more... i'd say buy 1 gig and if you're big on video games you could even upgrade it to 2 gigs later
AVG is a free anti-virus, it's easy to use
look at the windows vista system requirements to see what you'll need to run it

The Hp Pavilion incorporates a 19" TFT demonstrate screen at the same time as the others do not contain any reflects. If value is of the utmost priority purchase the pavilion. regardless of the indisputable fact that if u can make investments better flow for the acer aspire because it has a miles better helpful specification. regardless of the indisputable fact that, i imagine that the demonstrate screen is optionally accessible. also evaluate making an investment in a higher demonstrate screen because the better demonstrate screen area should be of serious use at the same time as surfing the internet.
