Why is everyone so upset with the gay marriage issue? If they are not gay why does it matter to them? if you dont agree with gay marriage dont marry one! Also why are so many political figures pushing the issue by using the Bible, I thought there was a thing called seperation of church and state! If they are going by the Bible, are they not just as wrong for judgeing me, romans chapter two tells us that we should not judege others, are they just hypocrits?

It is a 100% political issue for both parties.

The citizens in every state have banned gay marriage, some allow civil unions.

In the only state to allow gay marriage, the court, not the citizens changed the law, but Mass state legislature has since had the first vote to put a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriages on the ballot.

There is alot of hypocrisy about this issue on both sides.

When polled, most Americans are against gay marriage, but for civil unions with spousal rights for things like health care, estate planning.

The US was certainly founded on principles including the separation of church and state. However the religious right appears to want to eliminate this.

I think the debate comes about because there are different components and definitions of "marriage." Notice the language people use when they defend their positions and you will see the differing viewpoints on marriage. To some, "marriage" means official recognition by the government, which brings specific benefits. In this view, gay marriage is a civil right. To others, "marriage" means the relationship is approved by God. The people who focus on this flip out over the idea of gay marriage because it implies going against God, since apparently God is opposed to homosexuality. I don't know where they got this idea, but I'm sure someone will post the Biblical reference.

My take on it is this:
Staying married is hard in this day and age, as the divorce statistics show us. If two consenting adults love each other enough to take on the challenge, why should we stop them?

I heard a terrific song a while back which pointed out that the people opposed to gay marriage are
"Defending the sacred institution of marriage
From people who want to get married."

We all know who is hurt if gay marriage is not allowed:
The couples, and their children.
Who could it possibly benefit?

well to oversimplyfy there must alway's be the bad guy for there to be a hero.
but to get to the nut's and bolt's of it.the battle over the issue of gay's getting married is a battle of status.in a post one of the writer's said there is no seperation of church and state.thats true the statement is"the state shall not intervene in matter's of the church".here's where it get's tricky though.the state grant's manyright's and protection's to married people.the church has deemed that the bible state's gay's cannot marry.{hence the defense of marriage act}.there is a?of can we use commitment ceromonie's if we give equal benefit's.and retain marriage for heterosexual's.well this would work if you knew it would stick.but the idea has a segragation tone to it.so it will never gain a strong acceptance.just my thought's

I personally don't agree with it but I accept it as a choice. I don't judge people and I have friends that are gay and married. However, I can see this as a problem with people using this as a way to get insurance for "friends and family" who aren't truly gay and in love wanting to be married. But I also know this could be true with heterosexuals........ It's very complicated.

People are against gay marriage because it's different. They're not used to seeing it. Many years ago marrying someone that wasn't the same race or religion as you was considered wrong. Now it's ok. Give it several years maybe some of these people will come around and see that it's really no big deal at all.

The main reason the right is making such a big deal out of this is because they think it's one of the issues they can use to get them votes. The problem these days is that Republicans only have to make the right noises on a few issues, and some people will vote for them no matter what else they do.

It is a terrible injustice but some people want to condemn others and not give them the same freedoms as others. Unfortunately, we take four steps forward and three back each time we try to advance on the individual freedom issues. Other countries are way ahead of the US on this particular issue.

They are very hypocritical. Look no further than Cheney and his duaghter. According to him, gays can't marry have any rights like heterosexuals UNLESS you are his daughter. She's the only one exempt.

As for quoting the bible, here's one they should really listen to:
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Matthew 7:1-2.

The separation of church and state is about ensuring that the government cannot force the practice of any one religion and forbid the practice of any others. It ensures the freedom of every individual to hold their own religious beliefs, express them and to practice their religion freely and without fear. This freedom is extended to all, and so does not, and should not, prevent a member of the government from holding and expressing religious beliefs.

People with similar religious beliefs tend to form groups. If one of these groups does not want to support the marriage of their priests, the marriage of divorcees, the marriage of people of different faiths or the marriage of same sex couples that is their right. If you don't agree with their rules and customs, then don't belong to the group. If you do want to belong to the group then accept the rules and customs of the group. Why try to change them?

As far as civil law goes, marriage is about money and inheritance. It is about a man ensuring that his wealth goes to those children that he has sired and not those of another man. I say man and not person because civil law is written such that it is normal for wealth to follow the male line where it exists. Same sex couples, as far as science stands at the present time, cannot procreate, and so this aspect of law does not apply to them.

I must say that I find it rather ammusing that there are same sex couples who want to marry just like heterosexual couples while there are large numbers of heterosexual couples who don't want to marry at all.

As far as judging others goes, we all do it all the time. There are people that you like and those that you dislike, there are people that you trust and people that you do not trust. These are all personal judgement calls, not matters of fact.
