A few points to consider:

1. Sometimes when you knock one off a four foot
counter, it breaks when it hits the floor just so. So,
I think no need to worry about it not breaking.

2. Terminal velocity of objects like that is around
100 mph at atmospheric pressure and normal
earth gravity. 100 mph is of order 100 x 5000 / 3600 which is of order 100 ft/s. So, assuming you
just let it drop from an initial velocity of zero ft/s, it
would take about 1-2 seconds to hit the ground.

3. In that 1-2 seconds you could do a more sophisticated analysis, which would probably
bear out the above estimate (use the acceleraltion
of gravity to be about 32 ft/s/s). Incorporating air
resistance would probably require some trial
and error calculations though unless you
use an empiricism for the air drag.

4. In that brief interval, you have just enough time
for adrenaline to be secreted and reach the bloodstream and panic. Flee. Ooops, was it dropped from your room?

The answer is derived by taking the inverse of the square root of just exactly how fast the guy you hit in the head can find to you. Or the property of pi, times the cube-root of the strength of your door lock.
