He is a good economist but very political. His blog presents simple and somewhat deceptive arguments for his political views. His introductory text book is rated very high for being understandable. Keep in mind that using partial equilibrium analysis you can make an argument for almost anything, by choosing which factors you leave out.

He does. Someone with a blog and a more left wing view is Brad DeLong of Berkeley.
Great macroeconomists of these days are George Akerlof, the late Milton Friedman and Christopher Sims.
