The sky is the limit my friend. There are a million and one ways to build it. You could do it cheap or invest alot, make it mild or make it wild. For a mild set up and you need is an RV cam intake, carb, and headers. for a cheap set up go with one of the performer packages from edelbrock. pretty straight forward. If you plan to get serious with it then do your research. make sure all the parts will work with the other.

I just bought an 86 trans am with a 305 tuned port injection and it makes around 215hp stock. HO 305's are around 190hp, carbureted around 140. Depends on the years and what type of cars they came in, plus weather it was carbureted, tpi, or tbi. I believe the later 305's they put in pick ups used vortec heads. Anyway on my setup you can add a 100hp shot of nitrous no problems and I plan on doing it until I get the money and chance to swap out with a 350 block and heads. You can do just a block swap and heads, your intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, water pump, etc... will bolt right up. From what I've researched is that it's not really worth keeping the 305 if you want decent hp. Not that it can't be done, but for what you put into a 305 to get just 300hp you can get 400-450 hp from a 350. Hope this helps.

stroke it .030 over, do a little grinding on the block so you can stuff a 400 crank (like Scat or whatever) in it, get a fairly aggressive cam, some decent heads (like dart or edelbrock) and carbs or throttlebody, some decent pistons (like Lunati) and rods etc.... and then hang on. 383 strokers are powerful motors with a torque curve as flat as Kansas and alot of these motors live at 5000-7000 RPM so HP isn't an issue. If that's too much trouble you can always stroke it .030 over and go with all 350 stuff. The motor will then be a 355 stroker motor. Not bad, but a 383 stroker is better.

Start with a new 383 cu. in. from Chevrolet. They make six separate versions from the factory. Each and every one has a 12,000 or 12 month warranty. The 383 has more low end grunt than any stock 350 out there. You'd need to spend three times as much to get a 350 to out torque the 383. Look at these in the GM. Performance Parts 2006 catalog, Part number 19157556. In a month and a half the 2007 catalog will be out. There's no guess work here. Al selected combinations are here for your specific reason.

First rule-of-thumb to remember-- THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHES! While I am a small block chevy man, I can say, all things being equal, cubes will usually dominate. small blocks usually can hole-shot a big block, but at the traps, the big block is usually gone. an open plenum high-rise may offer some extra high r.p.m. h/p, but do not count on winning in an equal performance package race, especially in 1/4 mile.

supercharge it and RPM is your friend
with the right
stroker crank
roller cam and rockers
compression ratio
forged pistons
balanced and blue printed internals
exhaust
ported and polished heads
intake manifold
fuel system carb or injection
then add force feeding
the horsepower gains are huge and would sh!t all over a standard big block, although do the same to a big block and it will out perform a small block all depends on how deep your pockets are
for cheap performance add nitros but to a standard engine this will kill it fast but it will be fun!!!!!!!

I have a friend that has a 355 stroker engine that ran less that 6.50 secs @ 100 mph in a 1/8th mile track. The engine even had the factory iron heads. His cousin had a 69 Camaro that had little or no weight reduction, roll cage and a 355 stroker with Al. heads and ran about 6.00 secs @ about 120 mph. This was with no kind of boost or NOS.

On a dragstrip its possible to make a normally-aspirated SBC beat a BBC. On the street, a BBC will always have better low speed manners and drivablity at the same HP level in a similar car. Only way to catch up is a supercharger on the smaller engine.
No replacement for displacement

Sure..... you will need....
350 block
2.02 heads with stainless steel valves and 1.6 rocker arms
4 barrel intake manifold, dual plane, Edelbrock
4 barrel carb, like 700 cfm's
Cam - 290/290 duration and 490/490 lift
Forged aluminum pistons
Forged connecting rods
Forged Crankshaft
This setup will get you a good 300-400 horsepower.... as long as your compression is 10-12:1
