took us 40 days start to finish...seller's delay in looking for another home.
consider getting prequal'ed first...it makes the shopping and the rest of the transaction much faster.
The fastest I've seen it happen is 10-15 days. It can take forever if you have very distinct criteria for the house you're looking for....

Talk to a real estate agent (but don't sign a contract for them to be your "buyer's agent").
You should get "prequalified"for a loan from a bank. That is, you apply for a loan, give them all your financial information (it's very, very detailed), and they tell you how much you can afford to spend. That not only tells you how expensive a house you can buy, it speeds up the process and makes it more likely the seller will accept your offer. If they get two offers and one is prequalified, they most likely will accept that one even if the price isn't as high because the chance that the loan will fall through is much smaller.
If all goes well, you can get the keys in a month. Have an alternate plan, though; it depends on a lot of people, so there are many potential delays.
Good luck!

The process took me two months from start to finish. Do get a PREAPPROVAL LETTER from the lender which is a step above prequalification letter. The pre-qual is not iron clad, the preapproval is stronger proof that you will be able to go through with the deal.
Best of everything from SC where the living's easy and very affordable and pretty and there's golf, horses, lakes and friendly folks everywhere.
We're within driving distance of Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach, Savannah, GA, Atlanta GA yet more peaceful and just as beautiful. The people are friendly and the air is clean.
So, come on down or up, whichever the case may be.
