How to know if it is pure?

yes u can do that, but if u ahve a pure compound of the same kind or if u know aready the refractive index value of that compond then by comparing the tow values if both values are the same then ur compound will be pure.u can also find out refractive index value from literature and then compare it with ur compound value. u can also check the purity by finding the melting points of ur compound then compare it with the reported value in the literature.

Yes, you can in certain cases and depending on the compound.
For instance, say you have a batch of a compound and you are either going to accept or reject based on its refractive index that is compared with one of KNOWN VALUE or range of values which indicate corresponding purity.

If the batch in question is not even close to what you want, then you are essentially saying that the purity of the batch is not the same purtiy of what you want. Or, if it is, then you accept the purity is whatever you known values indicate.

I do not know if YOU can, but that is one use of a refractomer -- though not the most common use. See the link in wikipedia.
