I will recommend to have a bigger screen as it is better to monitor and programming at the same time. But It will be very heavy to carry around.

What are you programming? Monitor size won't matter as much as the resolutions those monitors are capable of. A 17" display at 640x480 will not look nearly as good as a 15.4" display at 800x600. The only difference the sizes makes can be seen by how far you sit from your monitor, just like a TV's size should be proportional to the room in which you watch it.
Also, it depends on what you're programming. If you're just doing PASCAL or something, it doesn't care what size the monitor you're using is. If you're building games, however, or a commercial application, like some kind of photo editor, then definitely make sure you have a monitor with high-resolution capabilities.

1. To the tard above who says he likes Dell, dont listen to him. Something like that says to me he also uses AOL and thinks the internet is a bunch of tubes.
2. I would go for the 15.4 inch if you are going to be moving the laptop alot, if not then the 17incher. I have a 17" powerbook, and since Macs are thinner than all PC's, it really is not that bulky.
I have a friend that got a 17" HP and its HUGE.
So if you want something that could be portable but really its going to be mainly a desktop computer get the 15", otherwise go for the 17!

I prefer Dell
Now as to size it is personal preference. I have a 19" widescreen (I squint a lot) so the larger screen is better for me. But if you are going to be working with it balanced on your lap in airports most of the time then the smaller one is better.

it truly is rather effortless for a computer to get really warm on the bottom of it, thats no longer a large deal. the fan speeds as a lot as attempt to diminish the nice and cozy temperature so any intense warmth will make the fan boost up. try putting your computer in a countless position. once you've the computer in a warm room, or in case you position you computer on something which will truly warmth up, then it is going to reason your computing gadget to get hotter than accepted. If that does no longer paintings, get someone to make constructive your computing gadget isnt merely having issues of overheating as some pcs overheat more effective than others or if something is incorrect consisting of your fan than it is going to overheat extra even even as it appears like it truly is speeding up. If all else fails or in case you dont favor to spend the money having your computing gadget fastened, bypass to a computing gadget shop and purchase a "cool mat". Its a mat that cools down your computing gadget once you position it on it and could shop your computing gadget from overheating or getting TOO warm.
