The Plains Indians fell victim to treaties that were not honored.
The military was under orders by the government to place Indians on reservations-by force if necessary. An interesting event was that of Chief Joseph of the Nez-Perce tribe. He refused to go on a reservation and was chased by General Crook and Miles. They surrendered just 50 miles from Canada. Chief Joseph in his final words said....."I will fight no more forever" .

It's very simple really; the Whites were more intelligent and knew how to exploit the weakness of a hunter-gathering stone-age culture.

If you feel sorry for them, picture your spouse and children horribly butchered, a grinning, hideously painted warrior, with a razor-sharp scalping knife, sitting on your chest, slicing off your eye lids, forcing you to watch the horrible torture that awaits you...

They weren't called savages for nothin'.

Maybe because of diffrent tribes having wars and being spread out, they couldn't really unite. And they had thier own languages, so communication was a problem. the "united we stand, divided we fall" theory/propoganda worked for the colonies during the revolution.

Have you heard of smallpox? That was a major factor. Settlers and your so-called Americans gave Natives whiskey, which they hadn't had before. They gave them blankets infected with diseases that Natives had no immunity against. They gave them guns. They made treaties which they broke. They killed them with better weapons. And because of the diseased blankets, guns, and whiskey, the Natives also helped kill theselves.
