without knowing the specific model of your fireplace, I'll still try to answer. When you hold down the pilot button, you are allowing gas to flow through the pilot. Usually the ignitor is a piezo switch that makes a spark when you push it one time, so you might have to push it several times to get the spark to light the pilot.

If the piezo switch doesn't actually make a spark when you push it, you can try lighting the pilot with a lighter. Once you get the pilot lit, you'll need to hold the pilot button down for around 45 seconds to allow the flam sensor to heat up.

After this you should be able to let go of the pilot switch, and the pilot should continue to burn. If it continues to burn, you can go ahead and begin using the fireplace safely. If after all this it won't stay lit, you might do well to replace the pilot assembly and igntior.

Again without knowing the specific model, I can only give you standard steps to follow with "most" gas fireplaces.

Try holding the button down for one whole minute or mabe a little longer. But first, if you are smelling gas, shut the gas valve OFF, and wait til the gas smell goes away. Then turn gas back on, turn off furnace switch, turn knob inside furnace to pilot, light pilot while holding button for 1 minute or longer. Then release button. If it still won't stay lit, you probably need a new thermo coupler. It is the thin metal tube you see in the same area where the button is. There are 2 thin tubes, the thermal coupler is the thinnest one of the 2, and at one end of it, is where you are trying to light the furnace at. It is the tube that supplies gas to the pilot, and has the small flame coming out of it to light the furnace burners. They go out sometimes, but are easy to replace, and the part only cost abot $5 to $10. p.s. the pilot buton is the one to hold down for a minute, THEN push ignite After you push and hold pilot button. continue holding 4 about a minute.

By"continuously pressing the ignite button" do you mean you're holding it down? I think you're just supposed to push the ignition button all the way down, then release. If that doesn't work, then some thing's probably grounding the ignition spark.
Look to see if somethings bent over around the pilot-it's supposed to have a small gap, like a spark plug.
The ignition system sounds like a piezoelectric spark ignition.
