Both - 1) your door seal may be loose permitting warm air in to freeze over as though it's "frost bitten" (Frost bitten appears when an item is not properly wrapped and becomes covered with frost because of a seal leak or dial setting is too high for an auto defrost freezer.
2) an older freezer will result in "frost bitten" packages because the door is being opened too often and held open too long.
3) Should you have a combination freezer/refrigerator, it's not just numbers on the dial to considered. There will be another dial with letters A-B-C-D.
There ought to be instructions near by the dials for the correct settings.
4) Determine how old your freezer is, should it be over 20 years old, time to replace with a more efficient model. I finally gave away my 30 year old freezer. The amount of electricity to run the newer freezer was a great money saver. The new electric rates permitted by our lenient PSC, with our money, was an even greater tear maker as my wallet became lighter. At least my tears don't turn to "frost bitten" every time I look inside the freezer compartment.

I think Valley R is right. New seal will probally take care of it. That has happened to us, the seal was not sealing tight and everything got a frosty look to it, which means air is getting inside. Also, once I had the freezer really full and did not realize the door had not shut tight on it. When I opened it, frost had built up real heavy on the sides and on the food that was in there.

This makes no sense but that happens to me when I leave stuff in the freezer for too long OR if the freezer goes from warm to cold so that the moisture gathers then freezes back. It really sounds like your refridgerator is about to go out...this is not normal.

Need it repaired. Or a new one... sorry..I know this aint what you wanted to hear. My hubby used to work at an appliance store and the man was teaching him to fix all appliances.
Something to do with the defrost portion he said. Not kicking in properly or something.
