My 1993 pontiac grand am 2.3L 4cyl is really idling rough, it started after I put fuel in so I thought that it was the fuel so I put some gas line antifreeze in, and then drove it and then put some premium fuel in because I thought maybe the fuel that i bought didnt have enough octane. It runs almost like it is choking itself. I really need help because when I come to a stop sign I have to hold one foot on the brake and one on the gas so it doesn't stall. Please Help!!

It runs fine when you are going though, except that it seems to use more fuel and there is a slight loss of power

Thanks for your help but none of this is the problem, there is low compression in two cylinders so it either has to be rebuilt or I have to replace the engine. So if anyone has a 2.3L 4ycl engine for a 1993 grand am, please let me know!

oo ive had that problem before. first time it happened cuz my idol was set too high and needed to b adjusted. the otha time was when i got some water in my engine which caused the head gasket to go out. now idk bout pontiacs, but in hondas when that goes out u have to buy a new engine cuz the new head gasket in the honda wudnt ever work right and it wud eventually blow up. id go see a trusted professional if i was u, just to make sure its not serious.

If your compression is low on two neibouring cylinders it is probably a bad head gasket. Otherwise you can do a wet test by squirting a half ounce of oil in the cyliders before testing the compression. If this improves the reading that indicates bad piston rings and means a rebuild. If it does not improve the reading it is likely faulty valves which means repair cylider heads.

Your idling solenoid might be bad or your mass air flow sensor. It has nothing to do with octane rating of the fuel your are using. 87 octane will run just as well as 90 or 92.

i own a repair shop, and you need to check the fuel filter on it and see if its stopping up on it ,this is what it sounds like that's happening to it,either that or the fuel pump may actually be going out on it ,i tell what i did one time i actually drugged one of my cars to death trying to get water out of my gas ,i had so much different drugs in the tank that i had to pump all the bad gas out of it,but yours sounds like it may have a bad filter or fuel pump on it,id try the filter first its the cheapest and easiest thing to do,this may actually help it,good luck i hope this help,s.

before you get into fuel problems...check the spark plugs..one could be fouled out, which would cause it to idle rough...while the car is running, pull of one spark plug wire at a time...if you pull it off and nothing changes in the way it runs, that will be the bad plug...check the wires to and see if they are still good...

I agree, likely fuel filter, maybe fuel pump. Good luck.

You might have unplugged a vacuum line while working on it. Listen carefully in area of work.

three possibilities: bad fuel, plugs, or coil pack; you burn the gas and replace the plugs, and if it continues then its the coil pack. I take it in if you still have the warranty
