DVD's used for movies are dual layer DVD's. They hold 8.5 GB of data. A standard recordable DVD is single layer and holds 4.7 GB of data. There are doulbe layer recordable DVD's that will hold 8.5 GB of data, but you need a DVD recorder capable of writing to that media.

A DVD holds approximately 4.7GB of data, which is about 120 minutes of digital video and sound.
