I heard a statement she made that was just out there. When speaking about the school she helped fund in Africa, she said she knows how the poor children of Africa feel and what they are going through because she grew up poor. Granted...she did grow up poor. I am not taking that away from her. I know she had it hard and has came a long way. BUT.....Poor in America and poor in Africa are two totally different things. She could not possibly have any clue whatsoever as to what its like being a starving child growing up in Africa. For her to compare her childhood to the childhood of those in Africa is kind of ignorant. Or am i wrong?
What do you think? Has she been rich for so long she has lost touch with the reality of what poor actually is?
This is not a insult to her. Congrats for all she has done. But i just find this statement she made quite odd.

My question is not regarding her school, and why she built it in Africa and not America. I heard her reason why and i understand that.
My question centers around her statements of she knows what its like for the poor kids of Africa growing up because she grew up poor herself.

I love Oprah, but I feel that she has to make someone else's past / struggles relate to her own.
A guest talking about her struggle with weight.... "Oh, I did that diet 10 years ago, today I am doing this one...."
Someone on the show about being raped... "Oh, when I was raped by a relative..."
The list does go on.
By the way, I totally applaud her in her current endeavours with the school in Africa. In that education the girls, will make them more confident, and want change in their society. Women will, with education step up and command that country. They will not tolerate what men are doing to them and their society.

I agree with u on this. Being poor in maerica, and poor in Africa is totally, totally different. Our poorest people are richer than in other countries,I am told. I also hear Oprah has a problem being black. but that is another question. Yes,she has cole along way, granted, I agree with you in the point she has had no clue what it is like to grow up starving in Africa. Yes,she has difficulty in what poor actually is. Cant agree with you more on that! I want that kind of money!!!!

yeah imagine the statement may seem strange, because in this country our poor still have more than many of the 3rd world countries' poor. But I think that she should be commended for doing what she has done. If she wants to say she grew up on another planet with green aliens, I would not care because she is actually doing something constructive with her money which is more than I can say for most of hollywood, the athletic world or even the business world.

Maybe alittle. But I think that Oprah is such a "Reality" all unto herself- that she can get away with looking at the world through rose colored glasses because SHE has the wherewithall to go to Africa & change alot of childrens lives... When you're as wealthy as she is, she can afford to be "idealistic" -& think she can change the world... And maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Here is what I heard about this......
Oprah went to schools in poor areas in the US and asked them what they wanted / needed. The kids responded with requests like gym shoes, iPods, Cell phones, high fashion clothes, etc.
When she was in Africa, the kids needed things like an education, textbooks, pens, pencils, shoes, clothes food, a chance at life.
In the US, the opportunity to go to school is there, it is a matter of taking advantage of it.

I agree. Poor in the US is not the same as being poor in Africa.

YES! I agree with you- the school is nice, BUT what they really need is HOSPITALS, MEDS, FOOD, why build a school if the kids are sick, hungry, and dying? she has her priorities all wrong!
