I have been seeing a therapist for about a year. I am not really sure if its working or having any affect. I think it might actually be having a negative affect. I have felt more insecure and vulnerable/crazy at times. Has anyone else had this experience? Do you just have opinions on therapy effectiveness in general? For me the only thing I have found beneficial about it is burdening a stranger instead of friends with my problems.

I have to admit that being able to have a whole hour to discuss my fears and foibles is one thing I enjoy from therapy. However, I also recognise that I have to get back to being my own counsel in my own life once the issue that took me there has been dealt with.
Some of our life experience can never be 'counselled out or away' however, they can be made managable to place in perspective and allow us to move on.
I would actually discuss what you are seeing as a negative effect from the counselling as that insight would appear to me to show you have evolved to actually be functioning at a higher level than when you started.
Save your dollars spent on counselling for a weekend away or holiday to test out if you need to continue or not. Sometimes we become so reliant on the unconditional right to talk about ourselves, we start going back to what the issue was that took us there in the first place.
Time to test the wings of self reliance me thinks. And, you can always go back if need be.
Good luck and enjoy life

I would think if you feel it is not helping, then it is probably not helping. You can always try not going to therapy for a while, making a deal that you can always go back. That way you are not left out in the cold if you change your mind. There are also many types of therapists, maybe yours is not using the kinds of techniques that would work best for you. Look around at different options.

You don't say what type of 'therapy' or what it is for. If it's for recurring depression, the rules go like this:

Only taking meds is more effective than only having 'talk therapy'.
However, both in tandem work best. Therapists have a vested interest in your repeat custom: after all, it's a business! You should ask your MD to send you to a shrink for evaluation. How many thousands of dollars have you wasted on this ineffective therapy anyway? I shudder to think.

Maybe you don't have a good therapist...or maybe it would be best to talk to friends and family about problems your having, rather than talking to a complete stranger.

...after a year you are learning to trust yourself. If you quit now you will be in this state for frikkin ever!... you would be wise to ask your therapist to sum up what you have discussed... and where he / she thinks you are at in solving your crisis and if she thinks you have grown
