She has been having screaming fits that have been getting worse every day. She is three weeks old and I have been breastfeeding as well as formula feeding her. (Enfamil A+) She now has diahrea and there was some blood in it today. (Not a lot) We've stopped giving her the formula and have her on Pedialite and breastmilk. Should I stop nursing her and just pump and save it until the diahrea has cleared? She seems to be in a lot of pain, having stomach cramps and a lot of gas. Has anyone gone through this????

Yes I know what you are going through!!!If you want to continue to breast feed her stop all dairy in your diet asap.It will take about a week for it all to be out of your system before you can give her your milk again.I have been through this with my 5 month old son,the first bloody stools where almost a little orange looking, then the second day they were red,he started right at 3 weeks as well!you need to stop eveything you are giving her with dairy in it.This is of course my opinion and I am not a doctor but these are the very same symtoms my son had,he is also allergic to soy so you may want to avoid that as well just to be safe until you can have her tested. In the meen time give her Similac Alimentum formula or Enfimil Nutramegen.I did use Nutramegen but now use Alimentum,my son eats way more,I also buy the ready to feed stuff.I would start this asap, tonight if you can get to a store, safeway carrys both of these formulas. If the blood stops by tomorro you will know it is the dairy.Be sure to take her to a doctor this weekend if you can!!If you want you can e-mail me if you want more info!good luck...lykke

Why are you giving Pedialite? Offering this in place of breastmilk offers NO BENEFIT to a breastfed child. Breastmilk is a natural fluid, unlike formula and other milk products, and is easily and rapidly digested. It's what her system is designed to expect. NO reason to give Pedialite if baby is nursing frequently. DO NOT stop nursing! Instead stop the Pedialite!

Breastmilk is the BEST thing for your child. She will absorb more nutrients and the antibodies in the milk will help her fight off whatever has her system upset.

The blood in her stool could be a reaction to the dairy in the formula. Discontinue the formula and just give her mother's milk. If you don't see an improvment, consider eliminating dairy products from mom's diet. It can take 2-3 weeks to see if that works or not as it will take that long to get the dairy out of your systems.

the first thing to do would be to eliminate all dairy products from YOUR diet. She doesnt have diarhea...all breastfed babies poop OFTEN and its watery...looks like mustard squirted from a bottle...but the blood is worrisome....
It can take about three days for dairy to clear from your system and your milk ....try for at least a week and see if it helps...if no change...than its the formula thats bothering her. Another thing to check...is the blood in the BM? sometimes newborn baby girls can expel a little blood from their own teeny tiny uterus's...this usually starts at birth and doesnt contiunue past one week - or two....so I do assume that the blood is in the BM. Are there any other food allergies in the family? wheat? gluten? milk? (not lactose intolerance...thats a separate issue) wheat and dairy are the two biggest offenders....but it is worth it to try and eliminate it from your diet FIRST and see if it helps...remember, her formula is dairy based....if she is sensitive to dairy and you WEAN her....you will be paying top dollar for a non-dairy brand of formula for the rest of the year!

Has the diarhea stopped when you stopped the formula? Definately call the doctor's office tomorrow and ask them. I'd definately continue with breastmilk to make sure she stays hydrated. Is she having diarhea with the breastmilk too?

There are a lot of virus' and bugs going around this winter. It could be a lot of things. I wouldn't mess around with it...

Does you baby have insurance? Do they have a nurse advice line? If so, I would definately go ahead and call to see what they say. Being that young, I would just say better safe than sorry.

If you feel your baby is in pain, PLEASE take her to the Dr.!!!! Keep nursing and be sure to burp her often.
Runny poops are quite the norm for newborns, it may not be diahrea at all. Baby could also have thrush that can get in her intestines, very painful for them, needs medication. Its not healthy for newborns to cry too strongly, and definatly not for them to be in pain.

She shows signs of being allergic but my question is why are you playing with her health and possibly her life? Go to the pediatrician with her.
