When I'm almost *asleep* while laying on my back, I get a sudden, intense wave of nausea. It's only when I'm falling alseep on my back. If I roll onto my side or lay on my stomach it goes away. It feels a lot like loss of equilibrium, but I'm not dizzy. What's going on?

I don't have acid reflux, and I rarely get it when awake. So, thanks for the suggestions, but I know that's not part of it. :)

I have the exact same issue and I've noticed that it's sporadic. As I'm falling asleep, right before I'm fully asleep, I will get a very intensive wave of nausea from my head to my toes. That's the only way I can describe it. I have never vomit from it, and it stops as mysteriously as it starts rarely laying for more than 45 seconds. It only happens when lying on my back, and if I flip over on my side while it's happening, it will make it pass quicker. My initial research uncovered a source that says it's related to vertigo, I have to try to dig up the source as it was a while ago that I found it, but it does make sense since I do sometimes have bouts of vertigo , and my mom suffers from vertigo as well. I actually had my annual physical last night and mentioned it to my doctor and I'm waiting for an answer as to what he thinks it is. I'll try to come and update this post when I obtain more info.

I don't have an answer to your question but just wanted to say that I have experienced the same thing. I will say though that I don't really go through it much any more though. I did though for a good 1 1/2 years straight then it tapered some on and off for about 2 more years.
It was terrible though. I am married so when my husband came to bed I would tell him to get into bed real slow as not to move the mattresses or if he were to roll over before I was asleep I thought I was going to puke for sure.
Isn't that strange...
Any thoughts on that anyone?

I have the EXACT same thing. The only thing I can compare it to is the hypnic jerk thing that sometimes happens when drifting off. But it's a strong wave of nausea. I would love to know the answer. I don't think the cause is any of the things that people are mentioning. It happens to me regardless. It started when I was pregnant with my last child. He is 3 now and it has been happening ever since. It is weird and annoying.

That has happened to me before and I don't know why. Try propping some pillows up so you aren't laying straight back.

check the items that you eat before bedtime.
dont eat right before bedtime. limit your coffee before bedtime as well. any kind of caffeine will cause you problems at night.
do you know for sure you dont have acid reflux?
if you dont know for sure you have it, i would go see a gastroinertnolgist. thats for the stomach. they will let you know for sure you have it..
good luck
