people are confusing me.....making it sound like a style or label or a type of music. what is it????

It means nothing more than independent music (music that's not published by a major record label if any). However, it usually is related to emo music.

BASICALLY: People generalize independent bands as indie. Independent band= without a major label (aka: NOT sell-outs).

It's the opposite of popular. Musicans can go from indie to pop to indie again. Musicans with little or no radio play, are not on the Billboard charts and get little or no play on TV are alternative/indepentent.

Besides music it also means independent films, produced on a small budget and not produced by a major film studio.
