The legs propell in a straight line, and the arm causes a slight pull in one direction which he can adjust with each stroke by reaching across his body. Unlike an oar and boat, both his arm and body can bend. I have seen several disabled veterans who swim competitively in hospital sponsored events, it's pretty impressive what they can do with their determination.

A one armed swimmer is not a rigid piece of construction and can compensate for his swim style as dictated by his or her disability.

If they kick really hard and aim their arm towards the opposite side of their body they will swim straight.
