Coupe I would say. SUV most teens will flip them or think they are invincible in them.

Sedan/coupe. SUVs are not forgiving if you overdo it on a corner, harder to stop, harder to park, and are MUCH more expensive to run. Lots of gas, more parts to break, and more work to fix.
Also. since many SUVs are classified as trucks, they don't have to meet the same crash safety requirements as cars. What seems to be a big, strong hunk of metal can crush more than a car. Some have such a strong front chassis (to hold that big, heavy engine) that it is the passenger compartment that crushes, while the motor has minimal damage. Also, there is no strength requirement for the roof in case of a roll-over.
So, unless you want your head pushed between your shoulders (and I'm not joking - I've seen it. No survivors), stick to the car. It'll be a lot more fun, and you can actually afford to drive it.
PS: And if you really need an AWD, try Subaru, Audi, VW, Mitsubishi...most manufacturers make them these days. And they handle the curves like a car, not a truck!

Some of these answers are a joke.
A sedan/coupe because it is safer? The only aspect of it being safer is that won't roll over as easily. In an accident you are far safer in an SUV because a bigger vehicle can absorb more impact. And today's SUV's don't roll over as easily as they did ten years ago.
One said that guys should drive sedan/coupes and girls SUV's. He just wants girls safer, what a joke. How noble. And boys should drive sedans because they will not be able to hot rod them as much. A sedan is faster than an SUV genious. SUV's are heavier, therefore slower compared to high powered sedans or especially coupes. And by the way girls will floor their cars as much as guys do. They just dont show it off like guys do.
Another answer said SUV's are more accident prone because of their size. Whatever. I'd like to some statistics that show that.
You kids should be driving big under powered boats like crown victorias or Caprices. If you hit something, you won't get killed as easily, you can't hot rod in them as much, and you'll learn how to stablize a car in bad weather.

Boy = Sedan, not a coupe or SUV. Boys are going to push the limits of anything they drive. A sedan won't be able to do as much.
Girl = SUV, safer and if she gets in an accident her chances are much better. Not that I expect a girl to get into an accident, I would just want her to be safer.

A generic Sedan like a camry or accord in beige.
The teen will be less likely to hot rod a car that look plain and boring. The police will be less likely to pay it extra attention. The insurance rates will be lower. The cost will be cheap to maintain it.
Whatever you do stay clear of an SUV for a teenage. It is a death trap for drivers who do not know about how a car handles, brakes, and responds in bad weather.

An inexpensive sedan/coupe would be a better choice for a teen. Even better, keep them on a learner permit for a year before finally giving them a license. Lack of training is the biggest killer of our teens.
Good luck.

A coupe possibly a 4 - cyl. Toyota Camry. There's absolutely no freaking reason people need heavy, non-aerodynamic, gas guzzling, heavy, SUV's unless you line in Colorado or the mountains of Canada. And financially a four wheel drive crew or non crew pick up retains value mush better than an ill handling high center of gravity SUV.

do not give a teen an suv. they dont think it rolls over for some reason. i am a teen, but im scared to death of teen driving. give them a car with low horsepower. dont u get better insurance if its a sedan? coupes have higher rates since its more sporty or something.

definitely a coupe/sedan i mean its pretty expensive already to get an SUV for a teen (you may be able to afford it i dont know) but SUVs tend to get into accidents more because theyre so big
