That show on (Discover Channel, I think) called MYTHBUSTERS tried out this myth. They disproved it. But it's a neat concept.

I have a flowering houseplant that started to drop its leaves right after I bought it. I told it that if it continued to drop leaves, it would go in the garbage since I can't bear to watch plants slowly die. It stopped dropping leaves right away! Well, I also moved it to a sunnier location. ;) I tell it all the time now that it's a good little plant, and it seems to be happy. And my family thinks I'm nuts.

I keep a radio playing in my greenhouses - the plants have never complained about my taste in music.
