Look in the owner's manual. Chances are, they'll specify that you should use any (that means any) motor oil that satisfies the latest API standards, which is signified by the circle or starburst on the bottle. And that's all you need to know. The brand of oil is insignificant, as long as it makes the API (that is, the American Petroleum Institute) happy.
This is another way of telling you that you don't have to pay for synthetics, Pennzoil, Castrol, Wolf's Head, Quaker State, or any of the other legendary and heavily-advertised brands that have been with us for a hundred years or so. Anyone's oil is about as good as anyone elses, so buy what's on sale as long as it's the proper grade and satisfies the requirements in the owner's manual.
Guys who 'swear by' Mobil 1 or Valvoline or whatever don't really have anything on which to base their loyalty.

Synthetic is better because it will not break up and boil off under high heat conditions. Synthetics are also much more slippery so there is less friction between moving parts in the engine.
BUT, synthetics will leak out of the engine more readily than a petrolium based oil.
If your car is in good shape and does not have super high mileage a synthetic is the best way to go.

i own a repair shop, and now that its has some miles on it id go to a good synthetic oil ,Mobil one is the best their is for any vehicle made it holds up real well that's the best thing you could ever do for that car to make it last a long time, and you,ll actually notice it running smoother and it may improve the mileage on it also ,but i use it in everything i own and most of my customers have me put it in their vehicles also ,,a good 10-w-30 would be a good oil for it,and you wont have to change it but every 8-10 thousand miles ,i change mine at ten thousand, and it sounds high but this oil still looks good when i change it,that's why i use it it holds up,a lot of people change around 7-8 thousand and that's alright also, good luck i hope this help,s.

There are many different types of synthetic oil. What you choose to use depends upon how long you plan to keep the car.

Synthetic oil keeps your engine cleaner. Cheap oils gum up to form sludge which destroys engines.

"VW is requiring its dealers to use synthetic oil and a larger oil filter in the 2005 Passat and A4. Some 2005 A4s are in dealerships. The 2005 Passat will arrive in October"
