Its a declaration from the authority carrying out the burial that the body inside is definately the right one and the body is indeed a dead body .They are not nailed they are screwed together and if a coffin needs to be dug up again it makes it easy to reopen said coffin..

Back before tombs or vaults to put the caskets in, when they just buried the coffin, sometimes rainwater would get into the caskets and cause the lids to slide off- then if there was a flood or something, corpses would raise up out of the dirt...

they are not nailed shut, there is a crank that locks it to seal it from the waste, dirt, water, and so ... also there is a small opening to put the persons name and next of kin in case something happened and the coffin was dug up or a natural disaster. hope this helps!

so nobody disturb the dead. they shall rest in peace. people used to steal stuff from them. different people buried in different things. some people in cars. 50,000 dollar watches. 10,000 suites. just to keep them locked up. and it's not nailed it's closed and locked with a special lock.
