Propaganda has always been a major factor in controlling people and directing political movements. The current propaganda against tobacco is no different. It is an attempt to eliminate the choice by means of social engineering, something the US uses well to elect social change, beneficial or not.

Tobacco, like many other items is not the healthiest of choices, yet it seems that the message is that if tobacco were eliminated from the earth, everyone would live in great health and forever.
Naturally, this cannot be true due to the fact that 1) people get ill and 2) people die. Neither can be avoided by anyone.

When I first noticed the anti-tobacco propaganda back in the 70's, numbers of "second-hand smoke" related deaths were approximately three times that of smokers. After delving into the "facts" of the case, it was obvious that congenital conditions were being blamed on tobacco such as a person born with heart valve problems, almost all forms of cancer, even those obviously not from tobacco such as melanoma. (this is still the case, by the way).
The truth is, tobacco is not known to cause cancer; it is only suspected to be a catalyst that may ampify the ability of a carcinogen to create cancerous cells and even this is highly suspect.
The propagandists set out to prove that tobacco kills directly and indirectly *then* set out to show how. This means that the "facts" were discovered *after* the conclusion was reached.

The anti-tobacco commercials are frequently spouting incorrect, unsubstantiated sound bytes but the posting of a program to prevent new smokers or to convince current smokers to stop in itself is not inheirently bad except for the fact that lies are used as truth, innuendo is substituted as facts and smokers are being subjected to treatment similar in basis as Jews in Germany in the 30's & 40's, though with far less severe penalties, so far.

Propaganda is the same method that the United States used (and still uses) to incarcerate US citizens into concentration camps without the benefit of consitutional law during world war 2 when Americans of Japanese ancestry were arrested and locked up without any trial or hearing whatsoever.

Propaganda is useful in leading people where they would not otherwise go, for instance the current "war" in Iraq. If it were not for the government stance that the 9/11 tragedy was somehow blamed on mid-eastern anti-American thinking, most citizens would want to know why the citizens of middle eastern countries should be punished instead of blindly following what they are told without proof to back up the official stance. Saddam Hussein alone was NOT a reason enough to overthrow another soverign system and kill thousands of innocent civilians or else there are large numbers of similar dictators around the world and conditions similar to middle eastern cultures that are in need of American intervention into their way of life. Many African countries come to mind as well as South America, Korea, China and the rest of Indo-China, many with dicatators or tyrants as bad or even worse than Saddam.

In conclusion, smoking is being treated as a contagious disease due solely to propaganda.

Which ads, the "Don't take up the very cool habit of smoking!" commercials the tobacco companies put out, or the third party ones. Yours is a good point. But consider that the tobacco companies have been hiking the nicotine content in their cigarettes.

I personally think that anti-smoking commercials are good. I don't see what harm there is in getting the message out that smoking is a bad thing. But I do see your concern, I just think that the Government would want 'positive' commercials as to 'negative' ones. They want to be spreading a good message, not a bad one.

They are not promoting a product, especially on that causes the effects that smoking does. They are trying to promote good health, and try to relay the risks of smoking by the younger generation.

That's why they are allowed to have commercials on the air.

The important thing to note is who owns the truth ads and website: Phillip Morris, the largest cigarette maker in the world. They are required under their settlement to do the ads and tell people not to use their products. Its ironic that they are forced to advertise against their product but that is how it works. I don't smoke and don't care if people smoke as long as it isn't in front of me yet and think some of the ads are catchy, especially the "You don't always die of tobbacco." That ad is hilarious. I was singing it today.

I think the idea is to save the children. Education has & will stop thousands from smoking. Not smoking will save many lives including those of us who have to live with 2nd hand smoke. It will save the pain of quitting.
California & NY already do not let allow smoking in public. The end of smoking is close at hand.
I live in one of the biggest tobbacco states but cancer & respirtory dieases are getting to be a bigger businesses.

Government has been given the responsibility for public health. Helping to encourage people to stop smoking is in the interest of public health. It is also in the best interest of your pocketbook. Fewer people with health problems caused by smoking addictions means insurance costs less.
