well im an art major in a good school, so it depends what kind of clay. if you use ceramics clay, i suggest you claze it for color and do your best with the figure. and if you use colored clay, all i gotta say is try your best to make it look good.

If you are going to do it at home I would buy some oven bake modeling clay. I make beads out of it and my friend has made marionettes out of it. You can get it in different colors including metallic. You can also buy plain white and paint it with acrylic paint.
It looks like you could simply role it out leaving the ends a lot larger then the body, then take an exacto knife or steak knife and shape the heads.
