My first thought is temperature. Make sure it's at least 72 in his tank but 78-80F would be even better.
Another thought is that the water is in need of changing. Change 30-40% of the water and see if that helps.
One more: make sure the tank is dark on the bottom. Either dark gravel or if it has no gravel then sitting on something dark.
If the fish is eating it's probably nothing very serious. One of the first things to happen with a sick fish is for it to stop eating. With nothing more than what you discribe, there is no need what so ever to medicate the fish and only put added stress on him. If he doesn't perk up in a few days and all of the above are ok, drop me a line and we'll figure it out.
Best of luck!

at first, do not tap on your tank, it causes rigidity for the fish, it is like someone smacking a cooking pot with a timber spoon over your head.... it is really loud for them...... Betas were initially bred in rice patties, so, that means that they can proceed to exist in low quantities of water..... yet, it truly is a fish. it desires room to swim and air contained in the water to breathe. ideally, it should be in a large pond with a good number of room to swim, then even as the water element is going down, it should be ok because it is adapted for it. In captivity, it truly is going to have a minimum of a 5 gallon tank with filtration and a bubbler. conserving betas in those dinky little bowls or tiny packing bins will make it really lazy and torpid, now to not coach make it extra apt to fall sick from the germs contained in the stagnant water. aeration enables forestall the germs time to reproduce with assistance from bringing them from the bottom of the tank the position they thrive to the exterior of the water. first, try putting a replicate next to the tank, so as that he can see himself. if that would not wake him up and make him extra alert, then opportunities are intense he's no longer getting adequate air. once you've an more effective 30 or 40 bucks, bypass to walmart and get a starter 5 gallon tank with the filter out and also you'll get an air pump for 5 bucks too. i guess in case you position him in it, he receives more effective. betas can stay 20 to 30 years if kept proper.

I think that is as old as a beta fish lives for, but I am not sure. It happens to any fish. When they get older they start laying on their backs. Then they die. It is weird, but true. All of my fish do it. So, it will probably do the same thing. Sorry. Good luck. Bye.

does he scrape himself on the bottom of the tank or on other decorations in the tank? does he have any little shiny white spots on or around his gills? if any of these are "yes" he most likely has ich. You can buy ich medicine at any local fish store, if you have a Wal-Mart near, they sell it too. only other things I can think of would be swim bladder disease if he is swimming in a spiral like motion when he comes up to eat. They will sometimes lay on the bottom is they have internal parasites, but int. parasites are hard to diagnose. I sure hope your fish will be ok. I love my fish. Do you have a local fish store, mine is very helpful when I call them and describe any problems i encounter. Good Luck

It might be the change in temperature. My fish did that and he was eating and now he's normal again. If he has white stuff on his head it can be fungus or ich and you need to go buy meds for that.. If the temp of the water is cold then go get a heater.

make sure that his tank is clean, and a bit of live plant is like a treat for beta fishes so if you already don't have any get some!! they also oxygenate the water so it's good.
Um if you were really willing to, maybe treat him with some frozen blood worms (you can buy them at the pet store) it might perk him up.
good luck!!

What kind of tank is it? What temperature do you have the heater set to and what kind of filter do you have on the tank? How often do you test the ammonia/nitrates and change the water, vacuum the gravel, etc?
