All motivation comes from within. All motivation is, in the end, intrinsic. What may seem like an extrinsic movitivator, such as performance bonuses, is actually intrinsic. You see, if such bonuses aren't intrinsicallly appealing to certain employees, they won't work with them, even if they are introduced extrinsically.
What a manager CAN do is find out what motivates individual employees. For one, it may be the chance to work on projects of their own choosing. With another, it might be one-on-one recognition. Still another might need the money. The smart manager discovers what motivates intrinsically, then applies those rewards when the employee shows outstanding performance.
Is this what you were looking for? It's the standard prevailing wisdom regarding these things.

Extrinsic motivation is where you feel valued and rewarded for your efforts and contribution to the organisation. This mode of management will inspire you to have the intrinsic confidence to perform at peak levels continuously with confidence.
If the extrinsic motivation is not of a genuine, constructive nature/'bad' management/supervision can then scew the employee's intrinsic values and whilst believing they are working to full potential they may in fact not be. Or, an employee may only produce the minimum level of productivity as intrinsically they recognise the managers extrinsic levels of motivation are not applicable in genuineness to them. Thereby the attitude of 'do only what is needed and no more' will become common place in the organisation.
A truly motivating manager has the extrinsic ability to have all staff under them to feel valued and working productively even though intrinsically they may only like a few of their staff members.
End of day the benchmark is about profit not people.

Sounds like a homework question. Try it there. No real life manager uses psycho-babble to motivate employees. Employees are motivated by the managers loyalty and appreciation (intrinsic?) toward them, and by appropriate compensation and recognition (extrinsic?).

Yes. My old manager intrinsically motivated me to want to slap him silly. Extrinsically, I knew if I did I would be fired and he will win.

No because if a manager tried to motivate the employee by lowering their wage, they would quit. If they raised it, they would still act the same way.
High fives and smiles and fakeness does NOT motivate an employee and lectures wouldn't get you anywhere either. If you keep giving an employee lectures, they will quit and find a different job.

Yes, a manager can motivate an employee through positive reinforcement, respect, and a reward system. It works much better than negatives and intimidation. People are much happier and more productive when they work in a positive environment
