Hi There!

A Tachometer or RPM ( revolutions per minute ) meter measures how many times the engine rotates over one minute.

For example: When most cars sit at idle, the Tachometer will read around 700 rpm. This means that the engine rotates 700 times in one minute. When you are going down the road the tachometer may read 3000 rpm or more or less!

The Tachometer on most cars get their reading inputs from the Negative Side of the ignition Coil. This sends A steady Pulse that the Tachometer reads and displays. Some cars even use a cable that rotates off the Distributor to run the tachometer ( older cars ) .

The Tachometer is very helpful. I would say it's most important function is to help the driver not " over rev " the car and possibly risk engine damage.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

As the other answers said, it indicates the speed of the engine in revolutions per minute. This is important to performance buffs because an engine has optimum performance at certain rpm levels; also you will notice there is a redline on the tachometer - if you run the engine this fast it is dangerous and can be harmful to the engine. Also notice that the tach level changes each time your transmission shifts. Your engine can be going much faster at 70 mph in top gear than at 20 mph in low gear.

A tachometer (revolution-counter, tach, rev-counter, RPM gauge) is an instrument measuring the rotation speed of a shaft or disk, as in a motor or other machine. The device usually displays the revolutions per minute (RPM) on a calibrated analogue dial, but digital displays are increasingly common.
