Your pilot flame usually licks against a thermocouple device that will allow the gas for the burner to flow. If this is corroded through or otherwise damaged, you burner will not light.

Or perhaps the safety control mechanism itself is dead.

Would be nice to have a little more info on the make of the unit. Did the pilot go out? Check the gas valve and be sure its in the on position. If it had went out it would have been turned into the pilot position. Also the cover on the front needs to be on some units to start ! Good luck ! I will be on for a while Prob, wouldn';t be the thermo coupler or the pilot would shut down too !

most likely is your thermocouple, its a part that tells the furnace that the pilot light is on, you will see the pilot light flame touching it. the secret is mesuring from the tip of the thermocouple to the part when it screws in at the other end, they are based on length. simply turn off the power and the gas, remove the thermocouple and take it to the hardware store. most places have them on the shelf. Lowes has them as well, then turn on the gas, start the pilot and turn on the power, if this wont work, call a pro.

It sounds like a problem with the flame sensor being dirty or the control board could be going bad. Count the blinks of the red light and then look at the chart on the access door and it will help you narrow the problem down. Still trying to get the gas company to turn the gas on. They are paid up and refuse to come out and turn on the gas so I can heat the house and cook. I asked who I had to sleep with.
Even that didn't do it. Tried money, bribes and crying. But they won't come out. So just shut up and get a new furnace and be glad the gas company turned on your gas.
Everyone here has to wait until hell freezes over.
I don't know why more people don't die.

I just had my control module/ignitor switch replaced. It was the second time in 2 years! Expensive but at least I am warm with the -3 degrees outside.
