I was just surfing the net looking for jobs and this position focuses on LBGTQ individuals. I know what LBGTQ means, but don't know why queer would be added to this list.

The question is this: Is queer a bit redundant or does it mean something totally different.

no silly or viscious answers please. I'm trying to learn something here.

thanks in advance for your answers!

Queer can mean a lot of different things to different people. For some, it's more inclusive than any of the letters, and might include "letters" that aren't specifically listed. For some, it's a political thing, and you can therefore have heterosexuals who would qualify as "queer". For others, it's....kinda like "supergay", if you'll pardon the clumsy explanation. It's like celebrating the differences (real and percieved, in my opinion) between straights and the rest of us; these wouldn't be your white suburban lesbians who have 2.5 kids and a couple of dogs. I would ask the people the job is with what they mean by the word in light of the multiple meanings attatched to it.

Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transvestite and Queer is redundant. The stipulation means to really emphasize anti-gay in no uncertain terms or "queer" in sexual orientation to any degree. Specifically meaning the strictly traditional heterosexual need only apply!

I think the Q might stand for Questioning?

Edit- Did you mention the Q stood for queer in your first post?

I've seen it as "Queer" or "Questioning". Personally I think we're getting too overblown with accounting for every permutation; just a simple "GLBT" should be fine. Queer was just a code word/ slang used to denote homosexual, just like "gay", queer officially means "odd" or "offbeat".

Q stands for questioning
Q also means people who don't quite fit into a little box with a label

Queer means odd or peculiar, and people used to think it was odd to be homosexual because most people would hide it for fear of mistreatment. That's still true today, but there are some pretty queer people who are heterosexuals.
