You are totally normal.
why did they start later 100 years ago?
One thought is that there are more hormones in food/dairy now (naturally or otherwise) and that causes earlier menses.
Another thought is that we are better nourished, and we are taller and mature earlier than our ancestors.
My grandmother began her periods at age 9...in 1917.
Fleeting thoughts....

Nowadays, with all the hormones added to milk and foods, it makes girls get their periods sooner. But if you drink organic milk and eat foods that don't have added hormones, you will probably get your period at a normal time. I am 13 and I got my period around last August. I've been drinking and eating organic stuff for a long time, so I'm normal. But remember, every woman is different, so don't worry about your period. Some girls even get it around age 17!!!
Congrats!!!

Yes, that is a normal age range. There is a trend where girls are getting their periods earlier because of diet. Most of the kids today are hitting puberty earlier because their fat consumption is higher than girls in the past. Fat is a driving force in what prompts puberty.

Of course, you're normal. The reason that many girls are getting them earlier today are because we are adding hormones to our animal feed, etc. Also, the age of your onset is influenced by the age your mother was at her onset. Don't worry -- you're fine!

The reason for the change is the steroids that are pumped into the meat we eat causing the hormonal change which, in a sense, speeds up mother nature.

I was fourteen also, and it wasn't 100 years ago. Why worry about it? It's well within the normal range.

its true. but you arent un normal. really the girls who have it so early are still abnormal because its a recent phenomenon and not a lot of girls have it. they dont know what causes it - but they think it might be from pollution in the environment.
