I got a false positive with my first two children, freaked out- had the ultrasounds, (no markers) and had two healthy children. I opted to not even DO the test with my third child and I am pregnant with twins and opted NOT to do it this time.
Honestly, if the ultrasound shows no markers, I would NOT do the amnio. It's a waste of time and there is a slight risk when doing the amnio.
Congrats on your pregancy and BOO on those tests.

If it was me, I would get the amnio. It is not a question of whether you want this baby if there is something wrong...it is the question of so you want to be prepared if something is wrong? If it does in fact show genetic problems at least you will know and you will be able to prepare yourself for the reality of the situation instead of being hit with it at the hospital, which is supposed to be a joyous time. Also, some babies need to be delivered in a specialized hospital to increase their chance of survival if they have a genetic disorder. It would be nice to know that also. But, if the amnio just showed a normal baby, then what have you lost?

This is going to be something you really need to think about. Don't let anyone else make this decision for you. Talk with your husband and with the doctors and make an informed decision.

GOOD LUCK!

Technology has come a long way since the original amniocentesis and the risks are much lower than they used to be. There is a new test out, I can't remember the name, but it is non-invasive and eliminates the risk. Either way, you should ask your OB/GYN because they have the medical knowledge to help you make the best decision for you and your baby.

Well, ultimately the decision is yours, but I would not.

You have to ask yourself - what will amniocentesis accomplish? If it shows that something is wrong with the baby, will I still want to have the baby?

If the answer is "yes," then why go through amnio?

Amnio is a procedure that should be done on the advice of a doctor or gynaecologist. If you're over 35 the amnio should be done anyway because tests are done for various genetic conditions. Talk to your doctor.

Are you high risk? Over 30?

If I were in your shoes I'd forgo the amnio. I had one miscarriage and would do everything in my power to avoid another. But, I don't care if my child has a genetic disorder or Downs. I'm blessed with any child God gives me...

So, it's a very personal decision...

Good Luck!

Have you really read how they determine your AFP score? MY NEW OB/GYN doesn't even do them! In my opinion, you may as well do the drano test to get the type of results they get. I wouldn't worry about it, sweetheart. I didn't even have the AFP test done with my 3rd & 4th babies. Normal, healthy ultrasounds and normal, healthy babies. I wouldn't worry about it in the least.

the amnio is not a big deal, I'd do it if you feel uncomfortable with anything at all. I had it with last 2 and was so glad I did. They were healthy babies, but the amnio helped me feel so relaxed with it all.

If you would continue with the pregnancy regardless of the results, I would not take the additional risk (unless the Doctor has important reasons to confirm any diagnoses, such as in-utero treatments).
