My sweet 8 month old Flemish Giant, Skippy, was neutered about three weeks ago. I read that it is best to have animals neutered because they stay healthier. But I feel like I’ve made a mistake. Skippy was full of life and so friendly wh befor. When I came in to the room he would bounce over immediately and he loved to follow me around where ever I would go. Now is just lays around, he won’t come over to me I have to go get him. He has even changed the place where he sleeps, he always loved napping in front of the sliding glass door in the sun. Now he sleeps in a corner under the couch. I feel really bad, is there anything I can do? Does he need a compainion?

Rabbits tend to be sluggish for a good long while after they're neutered or spayed. My bunny was down for about a month afterwards! However, getting a companion may not be a bad idea. Go with a) another neutered male or b) a female.

In the meantime, show him lots of extra love and give him lots of fruit and veggie goodies.

Don't worry and good luck!

If he just recently got neutered he is probably hurting. The pain is temporary, but he will always be slowed downa which is better for a pet. And because he is neutered he'll probably be better housebroken. He will go back to being happy when he is not still healing from the neutering.Especially if he got staples instead of stitches, no wonder he isn't as playful -- but he will heal and play again.

Rabbits get less and less playful as they age and generally by a year old don't want to be held at all. It probably has nothing to do with being neutered, but more to do with maturing. He'll enjoy your company just as much, just not "hands on" like when he was a baby.

Sometimes when you get a animal neutered, it tends to be "lazy". This is normal because its a change with the hormones and such within its "new" body. Sometimes they go back normal and playful over time and occasionally they stay "lazy".
