Let Jack's speed = x
Let Jill's speed = y

Speed = Distance/Time

Then we have

x=d/5
y=d/4

Rearraging to make d the subject of our formulae and equating:

d=5x=4y

Thus

y=5/4x
or y=1.2x
or y is 120% of x

Thus Jill's speed is 120% of Jack's
Thus Jill is 20% faster than Jack.

We can also say the ratio of Jills speed to Jacks is 5:4

This is a question about ratios.
The distance covered is the same, right?

4 hours (Jill's time) / 5 hours (Jack's time) = .8 or 80%

100% - 80% = 20%

Jill is traveling 20% faster than Jack.

Good luck in your studies.

We don't know the distance...so lets say (for the sake of example) that the distance is 20 mi.

Use the formula Distance = Rate * Time

Jack - 20 = 5r So Jack went 4 mph

Jill - 20 = 4r So Jill went 5 mph

Another example, say the hill is 40 miles.

Jack - 40 = 5r Jack went 8 mph

Jill - 40 = 4r Jill went 10 mph

So how much faster is Jill going?? In example 1, she went 1 out of 5 faster than Jack. In example 2, she went 2 out of 10 faster than Jack - which reduces to 1 out of 5 also....

let the distance be x

Jack's speed= distance /time=x/5
Jill's speed=x/4
difference=x/4-x/5=5x/20-4x/20=x/20
persentage of difference= (x/20)/(x/5)*100=25%
so we can say Jill is faster by x/20 m/h or Jill climps 25% faster than Jack

25% faster

5 divided by 4 equals 1.25

Jills time = 100%
Jacks time = 125%
difference= 25%
