I know a very minimal amt about gardening but would like to try and grow some avacados--is it possible to do this from the pits and if yes--how?

It is very easy and fun to sprout avocado seeds if you are looking for an ornamental plant, but you should be advised that most avocados don't breed true. A tree grown from the pit might not produce fruit or it might only produce inferior avocados. If you seriously want an avocado tree for fruit the best option is to buy a seedling from a breeder or nursery. Also please be aware that avocado trees are tropical species only - they can't handle any cold or frost.

That's no reason not to sprout the pit for fun. Align the pit with its pointy end (the stem of the avocado end) up and its fat end down. Stick four toothpicks around its middle and use these to support the pit from the rim of a drinking glass, empty jar, or similar container. Fill the container with water til it touches the bottom of the suspended pit, and put it in a sunny window. Keep the water level up to the end of the pit and it should sprout within three weeks. It can be kept like this for some time, or planted outside if you like. And remember, there is a chance it might produce great fruit if allowed to grow up - just be prepared to wait five years before it matures enough to put on fruit.

Poke toothpicks into four sides forming a ring around the pit. Allow the toothpicks to support the pits on the mouth of a glass of water about a quarter inch above the water. Place pit in kitchen window or sunlight until pit sprouts. Then plant.

particular....poke 3 the tooth possibilities into the seed (after it dries), so as that that is placed over a pitcher of water. Fill the glass so as that the backside a million/3 of the seed (pit) is below the water. as quickly because it sprouts, flow it right into a pot with potting soil. enable it get to an excellent sized sappling until now transplanting it into the backyard. P.S. make sure the pointed end is up and the around end is down.

Take the pit and put four toothpicks around it and place it in a glass of water half in and half out. It will sprout and grow. When it gets about 4 inches, transplant it in soil. I hope you live in an area where the tree will grow outside. They get fairly big.

just plant the pits, you will need to support the new sapling whilst growing - do yourself a favour and leave the support there for a couple of years - you will have to wait 7 yes seven years before any sign of fruit appear.

Remember, these are very large trees which need a lot of ground.
good luck

I just throw them into my back garden. I've got one growing now that is about 15-20 inches tall. I tend to kill plants I buy from the store, but I've had great success throwing pepper and tomato seeds into my garden too.

These are all great answers. I couldn't have done any better in answering your question. That is what you do to have an avacado tree on your property.
