If I havent talked to the person much before I talk to them about music its something Im very comfortable talking about and like talking about so I think its a good way to start a conversation.
If I know the person and dont start off talking about music then I usually make a comment on something around me or in the news, usually something that they will respond to. Putting a question in it is good because alot of times the person just says yeah or something like that.
Good luck!
(I used to be really really shy too, Im more outgoing now though I overcame the shyness)

Usually when something out of the ordinary happens or some event, it's always a sweet topic to use. Like the Super Bowl coming up...but don't mention it if you're not that kind of dude. So other than that, you should stay quiet.

Talk about whatever is in front of you. The weather, the stupid class your both stuck in, high prices at the gas pump, what good produce the store has, your kids, how lame parents are, the book she's reading, how good his dog behaves on the leash, how delicious a cold drink is on a hot day, how good a hot drink is on a cold day, the fact that you love mornings like this, what good exercise bowling is, what's biting, love your ring tone. What ever is going on -- talk about it. This weekend its groundhog day and the superbowl. Good luck.

Just say hello and go from there. Many people are shy. It takes me forever to get use to people to be able to talk to them. You just say hello and things will fall into place. Don't stress on it or you will get nervous

I would start by letting them catch you staring at them. Then may be you won't have to start a conversation. Good luck.

Cheese and wine.
