ok while all of the answers are very good i just want to make sure that you know that it doesnt matter whether all your stuff in the PC is brand new or not if it did not say Vista compatable when you purchased it then even if you get vista installed its not going to work and my speculation is that in the initial reading of the disc for vista it will scan your pc to make sure that all components are vista capable and if they are not esp MB and CPU and VID then you will have the same problem you have now.

Go into the BIOS settings and see if the drive is actually being detected and see if there are any options for disabling boot for other devices, try and disable ALL other boot devices (I had this work once on my own system, for some reason it decided to work only after I had disabled every other boot device). If it is being detected, open the system then disconnect and reconnect the cables.

And don't forget to make sure that the cd actually works...put it in a working machine, who knows you may just have received a bad media...

if all else fails try downloading a boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and THEN see if you can boot to the disk (get the windows 98se one or higher) by adding driver support (its an option that you select...just download a windows 98SE or higher boot disk), and then see if you can manually force the thing to start by going to the drive letter...probably going to be D: or F: and typing the name of the exe file then pressing enter.

EDIT, if you can figure out how to get into the bios settings (which you said eariler) then they should be somewhere were all the drives connected to the motherboard would be, including all connected hard drives. Just tab around until you find it, on my sony I belive it is listed under connected drives or something similar.

first check if your system meets the requirements..second its a DVD-ROM (dvd reader) not a cd-rom because vista is burned onto a dvd disc, second check if your bios is set to read CD/DVD discs first before HDD inital boot

and your Windows Vista is a DVD burned OS ....so no matter what u need a DVD drive..dont believe watch the other users say the same...and if u dont believe me like this check on the back of the cover unless you downloaded a pirate Vista...go to www.windowsvista.com and check there

All the stuff that I've read about Vista, don't wait, build it now, with Vista in mind, but don't upgrade to Vista for a year or two. Let the "bugs" get worked out of it first. Use XP Pro 64 or Media Center. Direct X 10 should work okay with XP Pro 64 and Media Center.

Ya there right is a dvd-rom you may need a new drive. There starting to put alot of software on dvds now beacuse of there large file sizes. So you best just get a dvd-rom/burner ther only about $50 and well im rambaling agin.......

Well, Windows Vista is on a DVD-ROM. Not a CD-ROM.

Maybe your problem.

You may have to boot to the bios and set the first boot device to cdrom.

that's weird if the cdrom is selectable from the bios. try another one if you have one handy.
