I think it has to a lot with the impact of African American culture. Its being widely embraced by children of all ages and races, which is good. However they are taking rap/pop stars, hip hop lyrics and ebonics to the next level and using it in their spelling. If you think about it not too long ago speaking and writing in ebonics was considered illiterate. Nowadays its the "cool" thing to do. They are projecting their "new found language" into their spelling, resulting in "lyke" and "Kewl". Because of this wonder thing we call the internet it spreads and I think eventually its going to become a new language in itself, if it hasn't already. Most kids can read what you wrote above and immediately understand it- I on the other hand read it 4 or 5 times and then got it! I also believe it is because of the short cuts online as well, along with the amazing text messages (and tiny buttons on old school cell phones.) Shortening words became easier when trying to send text messages it also gave you more space to type longer messages.

What kind of teacher are you if you begin a sentence with the word "okay", a slang term at best, and then do not use the upper case for the "e" in "English"?
I believe that the problem which results in stupid children is a conglomeration of those teachers who just want the paycheck, those parents who don't care so long as their child is "babysat" by someone else, almost all schoolboards to whom football is more important than the "3 Rs" and who won't allow discipline, and the Gov't for programs that "dummy down" the requirements for an "education"!

Well for some of those words, their not trying to spell them wrong, i think that their using abbrieviations:
ppl- people
brb- be right back
l8ter- later
as for gawt and nawt, ive never seen anyone else spell them that way.

Some of it is internet shorthand that was developed in fast-typing chatrooms, such as "ppl," "ur," "thx," and "h8." Beyond that, there are also certain words that are easily misspelled or commonly misused, such as "teh," "their," "there," "you're" "your," and "grammer." Many people are exposed to the bad spelling used by others only on the internet. Thus, a sense of DIALECT begins to form-- certain idiosyncrasies in spelling, grammar, and word usage are linked to the online environment. People who make this connection will use "internet dialect" when online, in a linguistic process known as "code-switching." It's the same way you know to speak differently to a teacher or boss than to your friends than to your grandmother than to an audience than to a fellow specialist than to the cashier at Stop N' Shop. These internet users are applying the same principle to the internet, basing it on the unique language they've seen other internet users use. However, they are failing to code-switch between different INTERNET environments-- they have not yet made the distinction between the language used in a chatroom, the language used in an anime forum, and the language used in an academic forum. They don't realize yet that the internet is host to a variety of dialects- a single dialect is not appropriate for every aspect of the internet.

I don't know why someone would actually WANT to sound ignorant. I guess in their little countercultures that sort of thing is "cool" but when they have to depend on getting along in the REAL world...the one that will put food their tables and roofs over their heads, they're going to be in for a rude awakening.

They are too used to text messaging. You have to abbreviate, because of limited text space, and they carry it over into everyday life. It takes me a while to figure out what some people say. Some people think it's cool to do too. (it's not)

People are trying to use any kind of shortcut possible. Spelling included. I play Euchre on Yahoo! and people type in "typ, gg, thx, n, r u there" and so on.

People are lazy.
I would ask you why you would care about spelling if you don't care about punctuation or capitalization.
