In days when daughters were really being given away, I'd say yes. But right now, daughter has a man, and man does not ask for permission. father was not involved in the courtship so why does he have to front money for wedding? i just don't get it.
someone please help me with the rationale.

They don't. I'd never dream of asking my parents to pay for my wedding. I'm a grown up. They're done paying for me.

This stems from decades ago when offspring gave their parents all their wages and the parents gave them a pittance back of it, in spending money. (mine amounted to 10 shillings, 50p today)When it came to a wedding, obviously the offspring couldn't afford it so the parents of both families paid. Nowadays offspring keep their salaries and pay a pittance in rent money for their keep, so the parents lose out and therefore, why should they pay? It was traditional for the groom's father to pay for the flowers and taxis and the bride's father everything else. Parents should not be expected to pay anything these days if the offspring keeps their salary

i think a lot of parents believe its there responsibility to there daughters, but now a day's parents cant afford to do so, so if there good ,responsible kids they try to do it on there own, that way they have the say in what they want and how they want to do it,i guess parents feel obligated, to help there child start there new life, give them a good start.i helped with my sons a little, but he paid for most, i just wanted to be a bigger part of my babies wedding, it was beautiful and i got a great daughter in-law in return.

Parents don't have to pay for a wedding! It just a tradition past on threw the years. My friend's parents couldn't afford to pay so instead they gave them a nice T.V instead.

There is no law that sez they have to.. its just tradition..

Most parents are typically overjoyed at getting off at such a small price to pay for getting one of the kids the hell out of the house though...

When my wife and I got married, we payed for our wedding ourselves, without help for either my parents or her mom. Her mom would have helped, but didn't have the money. But we really cut corners with the costs.

They don't have to. Nowadays, most people are grown, on their own and have their own incomes when they are ready to get married. My parents did not pay for my wedding and I would not have dreamed of asking them. It depends on the family.
