I have a question. I would like to say that I'm African-American, and I believe that this will help in trying to help me. When I apply makeup, it looks fine and even when I'm looking at myself in the light. However, when I taking pictures using a flash, it looks as if I'm wearing a mask that's lighter than my skin complexion. It almost looks as my face has an ashy look to it. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I had the makeup professionally applied by a makeup artist, and I subsequently bought the right shade of color.

Could it be the way that I'm applying? Does anyone else have this problem?

k, so put some moisturizer before you use foundation, this noustarizer help you to make your skin softer
.. and try to find foundation with the right color..
when you apply the foundation don't use your hand use the sponge so it can mix well with your skin.
and if you use powder don't use sponge instead use brush ..
good luck

I have the same problem with foundation (I'm Eurasian, though ). In my bathroom mirror, my makeup looks fine and natural, but in some pictures, I look more pale than I really am. It depends on the light you're in, for one. Not many people look good under flourescent lights. It could also be the way you're applying it. If you put it on too thick, it will look like you are wearing a mask. Here's what I do:

1. Apply a little bit of moisturizer to your fingertips.
2. Blend your foundation into the moisturizer, apply.
3. Finish with a sheer powder.

I cannot stress how important blending is. If you still can't match with the foundation you're using now, try TruBlend or another matching foundation. Test it on the inside of your wrist, instead of your face to avoid spreading bacteria.

Hope this helps!

I have had this problem and honey im sorry but what that make up artist told you is wrong you should also try to focus concealer on problem areas and not a whole lot of it either also for that ashy look that your getting try to stick to powder base concealers also i would match certain colors to your face if it looks like a mask its either too light or too dark watch how much of it you apply too much isnt good and too little may not conceal to the point that you want. :)

if your skin looks ashy, it is probably too dry.

try applying a good moisturizer before your make up, and maybe that will help

Try wearing less makeup, and make sure you have a shine-reducing powder that isn't too light

get a power foundation by clinque.. i know waht you saying.. it is also caused by dry oil on your skin.. try to get those little absorbant sheets that pick up the oil from your face.. natrogena, mac, and almost every make up line carrys them.
