I'm curious as to your age, or grade in school. The reason for that is that, if you're able to find your way to Yahoo Answers, then the grammar and vocabulary in your question / quote couldn't be above your communication skills, and you can easily "interpret" that quote. It's like teaching kids how to spell phonetically. You teach them by taking one syllable at a time. Well, you take your question / quote one word at a time, and in some occasions one pair of words at a time, and you can definitely "interpret" that quotation. YOU TELL ME what is a "free society", and what does it mean to be "unpopular", as maybe I am with you right now, and you can easily do your own homework. And the word "perjorative" can be found in many dictionaries, and I'm sure you've had some experience in opening a book and spelling a word and reading the meaning. Don't be so lazy as to come on here to try to get some sucker to do your homework for you. You'll be much prouder if you do it yourself, and prouder of the grade you TRULY EARNED. God Bless you.

Ok, First the quote:
I think E. Stevenson is trying to say that instead of the type of " free society" that we have today, where almost everything is based on appearences and money, he thinks that a free society would be more like a place where people are free to be themselves, even if it isn't the coolest.
Now for that word:
Pejorative- to make something worse. Like if you were to say something that would just make a situation worse. pejorative is an adjective

i think the quote means that a free society is a society where you are free to be yourself and not be ashamed of it, even if you are unpopular, you feel welcomed and appreciated and people like you despite the fact that you are unpolular.
pejorative:
–adjective 1. having a disparaging, derogatory, or belittling effect or force: the pejorative affix -ling in princeling. tending to make or become worse.
–noun 2. a pejorative form or word, as poetaster.

Pejorative is an adjective meaning "Expressing disapproval"
About the quote, I thought it was straight forward - If no harm is going to come to you based on your social position in life, then you are living in a free society.

I think it means that you have the freedom to speak out against and disagree with the people in power without fear of being punished.
A word or phase is consdered pejorative if it is said with contempt or disapproval. Calling someone names or making racial/ethnic slurs is considered pejorative.
