I have a dilema. I am 38 weeks pregnant with insulin dependent gestational diabetes. My doctor told me that I need to be induced early because of this and that she is nervous that if I wait until the 40 weeks the baby could become stillborn. My doctor will not induce me unless I have an amnio first to check lung maturity.

I keep telling her I don't want one because if I am being induced at 39 weeks then what is the point? Obviously it is dangerous if I wait until 40 weeks so why risk hurting the baby with an amnio at 39 weeks if I am going to be induced anyway because of the gestational diabetes? My baby is already over 9 pounds and I'm only at 38 weeks.

My doctor has consulted with two other doctors on this and they all agree that I should have the amniocentesis. What would you do? Has anyone ever been through this before?

I was in the same boat. I had an amnio done at 38 weeks to check the lung maturity of my daugher. First off it hurts even though they say they will numb you. The numbing only works on your skin and not your uterus. Secondly, they wasn't able to get enough fluid to test even though they poke me twice. It shot my blood pressure up through the roof and I ended up being admitted to the hospital 12 hours after the amino with pre-eclampsia. I was induced the next morning and ended up having a emergency c-section. All in all it was not worth it because my daughter ended up being ready to go home the next day after she was born, I ended up in intensive care for 3 days. So tell your doctor to skip the amnio because no matter what the results are they are going to induce you or give you a c-section.

Wait...three doctors agree that you should have the amnio, and you're asking a bunch of folks on Yahoo! Answers what you should do? THAT's the part that doesn't make sense to me.

The risk of amniocentesis is pretty minimal at 38 weeks. I mean, it could cause you to go into labor, but your baby is likely to be fine at that gestational age, and they want to induce you ANYWAY, so what's the hangup?

As for the weight estimate, if this was done by ultrasound, it could be as much as a pound off in either direction. And every baby grows differently at the end of pregnancy. The baby might not put on a ton of weight between now and then.

Do you feel comfortable with your doctor? Do you trust her?

If you do, do your homework, ask your questions, and then make a decision taking her advice in mind.

If it were me, I'd do it.

I know someone who was scheduled to be induced early because she had a previous stillborn baby. Before they'd do it, they required an amnio for lung maturity. They tried at 37 wks.. not ready.. 38 wks... still not ready... 39 wks.. still not ready! Finally at 39 1/2, they induced and the baby was fine. I really think that your dr's being silly, personally. It may be best for you to have the amnio. I pray that you are able to come to an agreement with your doctor and your baby isn't stillborn. My good friend went thru that ordeal and it's heartbreaking. GOOD LUCK

I would say no. If you are going to be induced anyway, and can't wait til 40 weeks. Then it does not matter if the lungs are not mature now or not. One week won't mature them anymore. They should be by now so I would tell them no and to just go ahead and induce you. Your dr sounds crazy. He says you can't wait til 40 weeks but will not induce you without amnio. Well, he will have to if he does not want you to go to 40. Good luck.

I would have the amnio. I imagine the baby is probably mature enough to be delivered at 9 lbs, but they want to be safe, I guess. From what I understand, there is very little risk involved in an amnio at 38 weeks.

Are the risks of the Amnio lower given that your baby is already 38 weeks? If so then i see no harm.

I am nearly 37 weeks and i too am having a big baby apparently so the sooner it comes out the better i guess.

I would get the amnio b/c you can't miscarry your baby this late. The lungs are probably mature, but having a baby that is really big is dangerous. Big babies have trouble maintaining their body temperature and blood sugar levels, so you should have the amnio so they can induce you.

The risk from an amnio is a start to labor- 38 there is no risk as you are full term and they want you to deliver. Why don't they just give you surfactant wait 2 days and deliver you?
