Has anyone else experienced a house "flood" when the icemaker in the icebox went awry during a vacation?
This happened to my relatives while they were on vacation for 2 weeks, and returned to find the house flooded. Does this happen often? thanks, everyone.

It does happen but not often. several things can cause this to happen. a bad ice maker a cracked or broken waer line a failed switch or a failed valve a service tech can determine the exact cause. I am one!!!!

I have a large service territory and have to travel for up to 3 weeks at a time. The last thing I do before walking out the door of my house is shut off the water to the icemaker and clothes washer.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of...well...you know.

Just to add to what Bob said. He is correct on everything.
I too have ran into it. Mostly water line has split or cracked by the connection. Did you move the refer before you went on vacation? Sometimes you can crack the copper tubing by bending it too many times. There was some Canadian copper tubing that was thin walled in the 70's- 80's that cracked alot for some reason.
I would recommend someone coming by your house just to give it a walkthrough every couple of days when your on vacation. Two reasons, in case someone has broken into your house and second, In case you go to Arizona for the winter and a cold water line broke and you didn't find out for 3 1/2 months. Both of which I have seen happen..............................
