Lots of people answering well, though there seems to be an amusing discrepancy between .42 and .416666...
The answer to this problem is .416666... but the answer to your main question, how to turn a fraction into a decimal, is ... long division.
Let's say you were going to do a long division of 5000 by 12. You line it up and it goes something like this:
416 R 8
12/5000
48
20
12
80
72
8
Answer look a little familiar? Anyway to do decimals, you just do long division but instead of stopping with a remainder, you just keep bringing down zeroes and going on ... so
.41666
12/5.00000
4.8
.20
.12
80
72
80
72
8
... and so on. When you see that you are getting the same answer, 6, and the same left over, 8, each time, you can stop and conclude that the six repeats forever, but that won't always happen. Take the fraction 57/80. Tack on a few zeroes and
.7125
80/57.0000 80 doesn't go in 57, but it goes into 570 7 times
56.0 7x80=560 so subtract 56.0 from 57.0 and get 1.0
1.00 bring down a zero and 80 goes into 100 once
.80 subtract the .80 from 1.00 and get .20, bring
.200 down a zero, 80 goes into 200 twice; 2x80 is 160
.160 subtract the .160 from .200 and get .040
.0400 bring down another zero and 80 gazinta 400 five
.0400 times exactly.
Done. 57/80=.7125
Drat ... The yahoo form is not letting me format it correctly. Grrr. Ok, cut and past into a text editor or Word or something and change to a font like courier that does columns. Then put in spaces until the long division makes sense. Sorry.

Divide the numerator by the denominator. the number on top is the numerator. the number on the bottom is the denominator. if you don't have a calculator to do this on hand, then you could just do long division.
5 divided by 12,
5 goes into 12 twice,
with a remainder of two, carry the decimal one to the right so you have a remainder of 20, 5 goes into 20, 4 times, your answer is 2.4.
5/12 = 2.4
Does that help?

5/12 means 5 divided by 12. in this case, it equals 0.416 (put a bar over the 6 to signify it repeating infinitely)

just remember this little saying, this is how i remembers how to turn a fraction into a decimal. "TOP IN THE BOX" meaning that you divide the numerator by the denomenator resulting in a decimal.
