Turtles overall are not great pets for kids. They require almost a lifelong commitment because they love so long, and they need alot of care. The need the right temperatures, a variety of foods, a big space to play and move around in, UVA/UVB lighting for proper shell growth and vitamin absorption, and they also need calcium and vitamin supplements.
If you are going to get one, definitely get a land turtle, as water turtles need alot more special care. As for being safe, almost any reptile can harbor salmonella, so you'll have to teach your kids the importance of hand-washing afterwards. Not keeping the cage clean enough can cause mites and other parasites, too, so be ready.

Turtles are safe, most pet turtles are very friendly, as far as disease, they really aren't worse thatn any other animal, people always worry about salmanela but this is unfounded, any animal can carry it, there was a time in the past where several large batches of turtles were sould with it so everyone got worried, but there is little risk, just wash your hands after handeling it. As far as species if you want a land turtle then get a box turtle, personally I prefer red eared sliders but they are aquatic

turtles and kids = not a good idea!
Kids have the tendency to not wash their hands after touching turtles, and they can get salmonilla, which can be fatal! That aside, turtles are easy to care for and are friendly, but not much fun to play with! Get something fluffy, they are more active, more soft, and don't carry salmonilla!

they don't look to be very affectionate in any respect yet should be dealt with with out biting. I have 3 turtles (have had them for 4 years now) and they have grown extremely massive. they're purple earred terapin turtles. i have were given them at the same time as they were purely little ones. besides, affectionate in the route of me, not at the same time as quickly as. you may p.c.. them up and cope with them no situation yet they educate no indications of love. they're neat to have regardless of the reality that. extremely at the same time as they hunt. they're in a eighty gallon tank with plastic clay rocks to relax on so when I put in some feeder fish, they flow searching! its extremely cool... Sorry, getting slightly off topic yet regrettably, the answer isn't any.

No turtle or reptile is good for children they can not take care of them properly. Even some adults have major difficulties caring for reptiles no matter how "easy" they are.

I don't know where you live. It's a good idea to stick to a turtle that's native to your area. First, it's easier to care for it. Second, when the children lose interest in the turtle, it's easier to place it in another home.
