ADVANTAGES:
Great companionship, especially from a dog or cat
Fun to just be with, talk to and play with
Teaches a child to care for something else's needs (water, food, and shelter)
Protection from a burglar or attacker
To share ones love with (unconditionally)
Encourages you to exercise when you have to take the dog for a walk
Something to snuggle with on a cold night--if that's the best you can do
Discourages other family members and friends from visiting if they have severe animal allergies
Aid in ADL's, i.e., by the blind and/or otherwise handicapped to perform activities of daily living
To live longer; it's been shown that people actually live longer if they have a pet
Substitute for a child; they are the next best thing!

DISADVANTAGES:
Expensive to buy, especially a purebred
Expensive to feed, especially a horse or large breed dog
Additional expenses like spaying or neutering, getting a license, buying a leash, bed, and toys
Often require some training, especially housebreaking a dog
Requires shelter that you provide, either inside or out (like a pen or dog house)
Requires protection for the animal's own benefit, like a fenced-in yard, invisible electric fence
Requires care in your absense such as while on vacation
May seriously bite a stranger or you, requiring maybe stitches or a lawsuit settlement
Occasionally introduces ticks or fleas into the house
Occasionally known to transmit an illness such as a Staph infection, toxoplasmosis, E-coli bacteria, and salmonella to humans (See below)
You or another family member or friend may be allergic to the animal, triggering sneezing, burning eyes, etc.
Barking, scratching, biting, and digging by a dog can ALL be a nuisance to you and your neighbors
Often messy, especially bird seeds, but also a dog (especially a puppy) will urinate, poop, and vomit, on your NEW carpet
Dependent on you for all their needs, i.e., food, water, shelter, attention, training, immunizations and other health care, etc.
Time consuming, such as for meal preparation, letting in and out the door 5 to 6 times per day for a dog
Costly if seen by a veterinarian
Dogs often require grooming or, at the least, an occasional bath and nails trimmed
Cats shed less if they are brushed daily
Dog and cat hair can get all over your furniture and clothes
Dogs will attempt to eat your favorite pair of shoes, while a cat will play and gnaw at the fringe on your favorite lamp shade and knock all your favorite picture frames off the mantle
And...
THEY WILL BREAK YOUR HEART WHEN THEY PASS AWAY :(

Disadvantages Of Keeping Pets

2016-12-17 14:53:45 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Pets are work... Don't get a dog if you aren't dedicated to taking him on walks and working with him everyday. Don't get a dog if you are going to tie him to a chain.. That's cruel. The vet bills can get expensive. Just heart worm meds alone are about 60 bucks for 6 months. They need groomed.. Cats are easier but still need vet care. Do some checking before you make that commitment.

The only two drawbacks to owning pets to me would be if you were allergic and couldn't be around them and having to deal with the death of a pet. Although they can be expensive to care for and they require a lot of your time because they depend on you for everything, they are completely worth it! I couldn't imagine myself without my little zoo of 8 that I have right now. For all the times they have made me mad (by escaping the fence) or broke (by getting very sick and requiring very expensive emergency vet care), they have made me happy even more. Pets give a whole new dimension to life and without them, I would be a different person.

Advantages:

They are fun, they love you unconditionally, they provide companionship and can be your best friend. I can't imagine my life without them.

Disadvantages:

They rely on you completely for their care and well-being. Being a good pet owner means being fully responsible (physically and financially) for their care, feeding, grooming, training, medical care, exercise, safety, and general health and emotional well-being. It takes time, money and commitment. It's not so different from having a small child. But I think its worth it.

Own experience, I love animals... but unless you're going to keep an animal that will live as long as you, it will BREAK your heart when they pass away. I have had two beautiful pets in my life... an Alsatian dog and a cockatiel... I tore my heart when they died. That, to me, is my only draw back in having pets. Only solution to that is to have an elephant which lives up to 50 years or a crocodile up to 200...

I live in an apt building which allows pets. Dog owners allow their pets to sit on the lobby furniture. I object to this because I believe ecoli and other diseases can be transferred to fabrics from dog rectums.....that is where they sit, right? You get dozens of pets on furniture in a public room and I see sickness coming to many.

Really, the only thing that's "bad" about pets is that sometimes they can be very time consuming and they cost money as far as vet visits, food, medecine, equipment, ect, and depending on what sort of animal it is/ where you keep it/ what it's exposed to, sometimes disease can be contracted. That's about it, though.

Pets are fun and they offer you a lot of happiness, pleasure and they relieve you of some stresses after lots of hard work. From my personal experiences i find only 1 drawback of having pets and that is that they cannot live for as long as we do.So once we get mixed up with our pets it is difficult to agree that he or she is no more.
