I'm sorry if you lost your pet. How can you not get emotionally attached to your pet? I have had many pets in my life and have had to put some to sleep. One of the hardest things I've had to do. I have 2 dogs now and they are like my kids. So no I don't think your dumb for being upset. I don't know of any support groups but in time you will feel better. Maybe after a few weeks you should visit an animal shelter. You just might find someone who really needs you and in return help you. Hang in there..

First, let me offer my deepest sympathy on your loss.

I honestly believe that any pet owner who is NOT emotionally attached to his or her pet(s) is an irresponsible pet owner! Pets totally depend on us for their food, shelter, health needs, and love. In return, they give us unconditional love. Over the years I have had cats, dogs, ferrets, and parakeets, and I have fond memories of each pet that I have lost. When I lost a cat after 20 years, I sought out a support group. I urge you to either find an on-line group or one in your neighborhood.

By the way, I volunteer at a local zoo, and I can tell you that most of the keepers get very attached to the animals, and they get upset they lose an animal.

Dumb? How do you not get attached to your animals? My animals are like my kids. It doesn't matter if I've had them a month or 16 years, I'm emotionally attached to all of them.

In my life, I've had many of them die. 2 dogs at 16 years and 3 cats at 16 years. I've also had kittens die. I just had a 9year old cat die last month from cancer. It never gets any easier to let go of them.

I cry my eyes out everytime. I get depressed and try to go on, but it's not easy. I still have other animals, but I never forget the ones that I've lost.

It is not dumb at all to be emotionally attached to pets.. Not only are they pets but more commonly the are our friends and companions.. They are always there for you.. never scrutinize you, just there to love you...They become part of the family... how could one not be attached.. i would be more worried about someone who was not attached.

Not at all. Or, perhaps I should just say you have a whole lot of company!

It sure makes more sense to be emotionally attached to a pet than to an abusive spouse!

No way! I've gotten attached to all my animals. I've lost many, too. and it broke my heart. For many of them, it just wasn't their time...='( Anyways, lots and lots and lots of people get attached to their animals. You know why? Because they love them! It's not dumb at all, these are regular emotions. It would be just like losing a person, actually, equivalent to that of losing a person. You'll mourn and grieve, I don't know if you'll ever get over it, but to feel sad when they die, that's not dumb, not one bit. I'm sorry for your loss, I hope times get better for you.

Dumb? I think not! Had to put my 1st dog down from cancer at 9yrs. and just had to put his son down just shy of his 12th b-day but least I had time to say good-bye to them both. They let me know when they were ready. Couldn't even work when my 1st one left, I was grieving so bad. Was a lil easier with my 2nd but still hard. Darn animals can be real heartbreakers when they leave us but I can't live w/o em. They are my kids!

Of course it's not dumb - it's normal and means you're a sensitive and loving person.

And there are support groups - both live and online. A veterinarian runs one in my town. You can try http://www.petloss.com/.

No, definantly not, they have their own little personalities and emotions too, You'd have to be made of stone if you had a pet and didnt become attached to it.
