I have been an outstanding IT employee and been with the same company for 29 years. For the last 5 years a new director has been particularly nonsupportive and basically insulting. This week during a retirement party, in front of a room of people, he gave credit to the retiree for two of my major achievements. People there were amazed and it was basically humiliating to me. Of course, now, everyone wants to know why he would say those things. I cannot believe that after all this time on the job I am embarassed in front of the people I work with. He has had two harassment cases against him. I want to know what's up but know I cannot talk to him without someone with me as he will not be respectful unless he is made to be. What should I do?

there's not much you can do.

having credit for your hard work given to another employee is bad, but hardly uncommon, nor can this be considered harassment.

if this is all you have at this point, i would suggest that you document everything that is questionable that happens for the time being.

if and when he crosses the next line, you will have documented everything that has happened.

i too was harassed on a recent job by the director of the area i worked in. every time something happened that was outside the specific guidelines of my stated job title, i documented it.

i ended up not using this information, because there were others in the company who wanted me in their area badly - though this little saga may not be over...

As I see it, your new super is trying to run you off so that the company will not have to pay your retirement. That ploy has been in use for some years now. Hang in there and if it's gets much worse, you will have to report him or her to your state labor board, They will investigate. Your name will not be used, it helps if you have a witness or two.

If you do not have a union rep that will go with you,ask your Minister and a fellow employee from human resources.In some cases 3 is better that 1.

Don't shy away as if you are in the wrong. I'd wait til he's walking by and be telling someone about your 'friends' or family that are lawyers. Also find out who is above him and speak out with your record you should not have to worry about your position. God bless.

I'd go in to talk to him with a good tape-recorder in my pocket , if fact I'd have it on any time he's around.( thy have some that are digital no tap and last something like 10 hours.)
and your first mistake was not standing up for your self, of course in a business lady like way.
